Clare is a registered nurse with a Bachelor in Child Nursing (Hons) degree from the University of Birmingham (UK). She further specialised with a Post Graduate Diploma in Paediatric Intensive Care Nursing from Birmingham City University (UK). Previously, Clare worked as a senior registered nurse in the Paediatric ICU at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (UK). There, her dual role involved acting as a Team Leader and as a Clinical Skills Facilitator, educating and supporting newly graduated members of staff. She taught on the ‘Foundations in Paediatric Intensive Care’ in-house course, and acted on the Retrieval Team, which facilitated the safe transfer of critically ill children from local hospitals into the PICU. When Clare moved to South Africa in 2009, CNPDI was in the process of launching what was at the time Africa’s only critical care child nurse training programme. When no suitably qualified local applicants could be found, Clare was appointed, becoming Africa’s first and only critical care child nursing lecturer. She graduated with a Masters in Nursing (distinction) from the University of Cape Town in 2013. She took on the role of Programme Convenor for CNPDI’s two PG Diplomas in 2016. Clare served as the Africa and Middle East Nurse Representative for the World Federation of Pediatric Intensive and Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS) from 2016 - 2018.
