Minette Coetzee began the work that would lead to the establishment of the Child Nursing Practice Initiative in 2005 when she began working in clinical areas engaging nurses and teams in clinical practice development. In 2007, the Head of the Department of Paediatrics requested her assistance to re-establish children’s nursing training at UCT. In addition to fulfilling that brief, Minette led the establishment of the first regulatory frameworks and training programmes in paediatric critical care nursing in sub-Saharan Africa and has spearheaded in-country paediatric nurse training in the Sub-Saharan region. Minette is committed to finding local best practice models and translating complex emerging scientific understandings and evidence into simple and effective nursing interventions and curricula that can improve health outcomes of children in the region. She leads a team committed to developing participative methods in research, education and innovative practice development.
Minette is a registered nurse with additional professional qualifications in paediatric nursing, midwifery, psychiatry and community health nursing. After gaining extensive clinical experience as paediatric nurse at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in neonatal and paediatric surgical ICU and general paediatrics, Minette led the emergency admission ward for two years. This was followed by ten years’ experience as a senior lecturer in UCT’s Department of Nursing and Midwifery. In 2000, Minette completed a PhD at UCT with a dissertation entitled, ‘Learning to Care for Children: towards a model for undergraduate students in nursing – a grounded theory study’. After this Minette completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, GA in the USA focussing on nurses’ contribution to the care of children with HIV/AIDS, immunology in children and participative models of practice improvement. Minette has published 22 articles in peer-reviewed journals and her on-going topics of particular interest are participative methodologies in research, clinical practice and curriculum design. Minette served as Africa and Middle East representative of the World Federation of Paediatric and Critical Care Societies between 2009 and 2013 and vice-chair 2014-2016.
